This summer has seen a lot of brown, patchy lawns. This was due to
something called dry patch which in turn was caused by the hot
conditions earlier in the year. Although we have had rain since, this has
run off the dry patches (high spots, top of slopes etc) and only made a
difference in the low areas that have held the water or are shadier. These
lower areas have been able to make use of the fertiliser we have applied.
If this is the case on your lawn, what can we do to help prevent it happening again next year?

What Grassroots Can Do
We can apply a Wetting Agent that will break down the waxy surface (hydrophobic soil) and allow
water to penetrate through the soil and into the rootzone where it will do some good. This would be
applied this autumn and next spring (March to April) This will help if conditions are similar next summer
and can be repeated each Spring for best results. Of course there is no substitute for water and
the wetting agent will only work if its watered in either by nature or yourselves.
Please contact us if you would like to go ahead with our new service or want to
discuss it further.

Things You Can Do
Water your lawn. Once it has dried out, it takes an amazing amount of water to bring it
back (as this year has demonstrated). The best plan is not let it dry out in
the first place. From as early as March if we go for more than one week
without rain, give your lawn a good soaking. This will encourage the roots
to develop and grow deeper, and keep the soil receptive to water. If this is
continued, the ground should not dry out.
An application of wetting agent every spring will help to conserve any
water/rain applied in the warmer months.
